From Fudzail
I was really shocked and speechless to be informed about Nur Amalina Che Bakri.
Nur Amalina had held briefly the record of most 1As scored in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. Upon the announcement of results of SPM 2004 on 26 March 2005, she received 17 1As - a record for number of 1As received by a student in the history of Malaysian education back then.[2] She was sponsored by Bank Negara Malaysia to study medicine in the United Kingdom, and did her A-levels in Cheltenham Ladies College in the UK.[3]
I was informed that she had failed in her second year medical study at the University of Edinburgh.
I really hope this is not true......if it is, what went wrong?

er, these As are only good for local U?
A product of UMNO School. In Malaysia can get A lot of A's but outside University fail the reason given rindu kampung... sebenarnya tak pahe bahaso Ongeris!?
This kind a Failure will not be highlighted in local media cause they will degrade the bumiputra's.....
but can they take blame for her failure!? Actually UMNO should take the blame because of their policy to pass most of the bumiputra students with high results, infact, inreality they really struggling to cope up when they are in overseas..
Finally it is also coming down to the teachers who are really UMNO/BTN ( small Nappolian)style Graduates who wants only UMNOputra/bumiputra to excell!!!
maybe her engrand moe powderful then the brits. until dey cunt not understooded her.

Let me tell you an answer for this.
SPM depends solely on your memorizing skills.. which we (including me) are trained for. I see many people (not only malays) scored many A's in SPM but then failed when they entered U.
English for example, if you see the current SPM English 1119 Paper questions, believe me, it'll make you puke. I can see the english essay questions in SPM looks more or less like English Grade 7 in US!
Yes, we learned more than other countries when it comes to maths and science, but still, it is MEMORIZING, but not analysing and understanding. I guess Nur Amalina has a good memory don't she? ;)
Moreover, SPM never teaches you to manage your time well. Most people studied last minute, and in fact, some people agree that when you study last minute, it is actually MORE effective.. so i guess another problem that she faces is TIME MANAGEMENT, i guess her assignments are piling up everyday until she got no time to MEMORIZE her facts.
There's still alot flaw in our education system. Thank God that I've chosen to study in ICPU which is more or less like a uni-life, perhaps an actual "pre-uni" life..
JPA Scholar currently enjoying in Canada =)
Failing in exam is not the end of the world.Become Amway distributor and earn millions. Our "A" could be 50% or 65%,do not be too excited about "A" in malaysia, afyter all malaysia is 1 corrupted country !
I would be interested in hearing what our education minister has to say about this!
moohidin : '...dun look at me, i was NOT edu min then , ok !? @#$%^&* '
BIASA LA BANG, BUMI MAH!!!, MESTI KENA ADA SE BANYAK2 A MAH!!
BAWAH TEMPURONG MESTI LAH BOLEH COLLECT DEGREE, BILA MASUK KE UNI LUAR NEGRI REALITI ITU BOLEH DI FAHAM LOR!!!
KESIAN CHE ADIK INI, SEMUA INI PASAL BABI PUNYA BN.
It is not the failure of Nur Amalina, it is the failure of the whole system which is corrupted. Do not look far, just look at the system down south of the border.
Why is S$1.00 = RM 2.45?
Now, Nur Amalina has to be supported to prevent from nervous breakdown!
If indeed this news is true, than it is a very sad outcome for one of Malaysia's brightest daughter.
As much as u despise BN and everything that are related to it, you can't deny her intelligence and diss her to merely as a product of UMNO school. You have to remember that she was EQUALLY excellent in both Malaysian and British education system - she scored 17As in SPM, and straight As in her A-Level examination in the UK. Heck, she emerged top among her English-speaking peers! Budak ni memang bijak..campak kat mana2 education system pun dia akan score jugak..
She gained entry into Medic school based on her excellent A-level result, and she must have surely performed well in her entry exam and interviews as well. Up to this point, nothing suggests that she is benifiting from a flawed systems that artificially inflated her capabilities, by virtue of her being a bumiputera. If you are good, you are good.
About failing in her 2nd year.. no one knows, except herself, what really went wrong? Having difficulties adjusting to Western society? Falling madly in love with somebody sampai terlupa pasal study? Having nervous breakdown? Missing her family terribly? Experiencing personal trauma or tragedy? Or she could possibly could not have cope with all the the expectations and pressures of living under the limelight. Remember that Nur Amalina is sort of a pseudo-celebrity in Malaysia. There were massive media coverage around her, with TV and radio appearance and all. This kind of exposures are probably too much to handle for a shy, small town girl like her. I mean, how many of us, had their failures and their downfall being discussed and rediculed in public like Amalina?
I really pity her. I hope she still has the energy to pick up the bits and pieces of her dignity back, and since this is only her 2nd year, maybe she can repeat her paper too?

Dear all. I'm Charis, currently a 3rd year Edinburgh medical student.
I'm writing this as I'm absolutely saddened and disgusted by the rumours spread about my coursemate Nur Amalina Che Bakri or more popular known on the net as the 17A1 scorer. To clarify, she is doing very well and is actually doing an intercalated honours degree in Pharmacology with Industrial Experience. She did not fail her second year but actually did quite well. That intercalated degree is a very competitive one and she obtained it by her merit (with Bank Negara's funding). If I'm not mistaken, she has also obtained an ERASMUS transfer programme where she can do part of that course in a partner European university. She will be returning to 3rd year medicine in 2010, and if all things go well, graduate in 2013.
I understand that there is widespread dissatisfaction about the allocation of scholarships in Malaysia. However, whether it is just or not, I think that Nur Amalina or other scholars should never be victimised by false rumours. It is NOT their fault, whatever it is. Leave her alone, please. If your anger or frustration is meant to be at the scholarship-givers, i.e. the government or other organisations giving out scholarships, let it be directed at them and them only, and voice out your concerns and frustrations in a manner worthy of a concern citizen. There are flaws to the system, no doubt. There's the question on whether such a heavy cost of sending a scholar overseas is justified. Then, there is the issue of scholars who 'disappear' after graduating. There are scholars who fail year after a year, costing taxpayers a huge sum of money. And there's always that talk about the unclear criteria of selection for scholarships. But let's get our facts right before pointing our fingers, and perhaps check who we are pointing our fingers at, lest we wrongly defame and even character assasinate young scholars with great potential.
