UiTM is now open to non-Malays?

By Kesavan Sathasivam

I always thought that UiTM (University Institut Teknologi MARA) was strictly for Bumiputeras. Can someone explain to me how did Goh Wei Liang, an ethnic Chinese got to do his pre-university course at UiTM. I remeber not long ago the UiTM students were up in arm when a suggestion was made to open the university to non-Malays.
The following article appeared in The Star:

UiTM slams MB’s proposal

SHAH ALAM: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah has hit out at Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s suggestion that the university open its doors to non-bumiputra students.

Prof Ibrahim said the call to have non-bumiputras allowed into the university was against the purpose of setting up the university.

“UiTM was set up to provide the bumiputras a chance to improve themselves by attaining tertiary education,” he told a press conference at the university here yesterday.

He was commenting on Khalid’s statement asking for UiTM to open 10% of its intake to the other races to raise the level of integration, competitiveness and the quality of graduates.

He said the power to decide on any changes to the intakes in UiTM was up to the government. Earlier about 5,000 UITM students held a peaceful demonstration in front of the state secretariat building where they also handed over a memorandum to a state government official objecting to the call by Khalid.

UiTM student body president Luqmannulhakim Mohamad Idris said the students wanted Khalid to retract the statement and apologise.

“We (the students) are very disturbed by the statement and we have planned our strategy on what to do if the Mentri Besar does not apologise and retract the statement,” he said.

Khalid, meanwhile said the proposal was done in the interests of both bumiputras and others.

Khalid said he was fully aware that he had no right to decide on the quota for non-Malays in UiTM.

Below is the reply given by Goh Wei Liang in his Blog A Piece of My Mind.:

Anonymous of 4.21pm, I was offered a PSD scholarship to pursue my pre university course in UiTM and my degree in Australia.

I hope that answers your question. Do not be blinded by intentions to criticize or find fault to discredit the blogger or those who write as a support for Barisan Nasional, the Government of for Pakatan Rakyat in any case.

The concern lies on the main points raised in the article. Thank you, however, for your kind concern on my education path.

Well, if you want to know, I shall share. There is a campus in Seksyen 17 and Seksyen 18 where the hostels and teaching colleges are located.

The hostels are known as Kolej Cemara and Kolej Akasia. The teaching centre is known as International Education Centre (INTEC) UiTM where all scholars sponsored by JPA, BNM, Petronas etc all come together to learn.

Some are also scholars under the MoE under the TESL program.

These students gather in this particular campus under UiTM for their Pre University courses that include American Degree Program, Australian Matriculation, London A Levels, Russian preparatory program, etc.

When I left, I remember my VC was saying that she intend to open up INTEC to private students as well. I believe there are a small percentage of private students there already.

Of course, INTEC has top results, activities and quality students like the famous KYUEM.

This campus is mainly preparatory/pre university for overseas education program under various sponsorship. No degrees are completed and no degree programs are carried out in the campus as far as I know.

Thus, that differentiates UiTM Seksyen 17-18 with UiTM Shah Alam Induk.

I am glad and happy to see MarGeeMar and readers have great interest or attention in what I write.

Of course, I proceed in a professional manner. I wonder if this blog walks with ethics. That remains a question till today.

Nothing professional Omar Goh. You don't even have the guts or the what you claim to be professionalism to dare post Mrs. Ho (the 58 year old grandmothers) comments in your APONG Blog. At least MarGeeMar gives you space to write your crap. Come to think of it,you need MarGeeMar to publicize you. What a loser.

Goh Wei Liang is trying to stir up a serious religious clash between Muslims and Christians in Malaysia by writing the following in his Blog:

But let me make things clear. If Allah can be used as a reference to God in Herald, then Allah can be used as a reference to God in Catholic Churches.

The preachers of Christianity and those who serve God must acknowledge those who praise Allah as their sons of God as well, no ?

Then perhaps we can move around, including the compounds of Churches, saying or shouting "Allahuakbar", no ?

Muslims can actually go around teasing the Christians on the use of "Allah". Anyone can also walk in to Churches and legally chant Allahuakbar.

Christians must accept that "Hey, he is singing praises of our Lord." No ?

Someone MUST lodge a Police report against this Goh Wei Liang character as he is up to no good by trying to fan religious sentiments.

I think Mr Goh is a bit confused lah. At the moment, any UMNO fellas can chant "Allahuakbar" anywhere they please. Just like the dungu head protestors did and some more with police protection.

Anyway, the issue is the word "Allah", not anthing else. So Mr Goh in his overzealouness to impress UMNO sort of got lost on the issue at hand. I think the Muslims in general, are way smarter than what Mr Goh is trying to portray. I do not think the Muslims need someone like Mr Goh to tell them that they would get confused if the word is used in churches. I cannot imagine how a Muslim who is taught Islam from a very young age could actually get confused just because someone else also have this word.

The Muslims need protection from UMNO and the likes of Mr Goh more than anything else if you ask me. Mr Goh is a Dr Ridhuan Tee in the making. Have a conscience, Mr Goh, not everything should be sold.
