Chinese Chauvinism & Racism in Malaysian Schools

By David Chua

I'm not amused to read a report in Malaysiakini that non-Chinese teachers are not welcome in Chinese Primary Schools in Sabah. The reason why I'm not amused is that Chinese Schools in Malaysia has to a certain extent become a bastion for Chinese chauvinism and racism.

I have personally experienced as a non Mandarin speaking Chinese being alienated by my Mandarin speaking colleagues. They somehow feel that I'm not a 'pure' Chinese as I did not go to a Chinese school. In short, I'm a 'Banana Chinese'.

My daughter goes to a premier Chinese Girls School in Penang and she has came back home and told me how teachers in her school have taught them among others, not to trust people of other races, eat food given by their Malay friends as the food may have a spell in it that would make them marry a Malay or covert to Islam. They are told not to trust Indians especially Indian men as they would try to molest or rape them.

They even discouraged students from having non Chinese boyfriends. One student was scolded by her teacher for having a Sikh boyfriend. Another interesting point to note is that the school that my daughter goes to has an unwritten policy of rejecting male Indian teachers who are posted by the Education Department to the School. The reason for this is that there is a 'fear' among parents that male Indian teachers have a tendency to molest or rape their daughters.

To be honest, as a Malaysian First and Chinese Second, Malaysian, I'm really disappointed with my fellow Chinese for their racism and chauvinism.

David, please don't generalise and make our race relations worse. As it is they are already trying to get rid of Chinese schools. My children are also in Chinese schools and I don't hear them complaining about racism. Although predominantly Chinese, they have classmates of all races in their primary school. Your school could be just one extreme case. I don't speak Mandarin either, and I tell people off if they confer in Mandarin if I am supposed to be part of the discussion. It's extremely annoying!

Kudos..finally a chinese has spoken up! The chinese educated are often very racist in their attitude. They may deny it but in my 21 years of living in Ipoh (after 26 in KL) with them is experience enough.

Hey David, don't bullshit with your unfounded accusation. By the way, the so called "english speaking" chinese also tend to look down on others with their sense of superiority!

In order to solve your problem, please attend Chinese school during your next life if you are born a chinese.

I do not believe what you have said and I certainly do not believe that Chinese schools produces people of that caliber !

Finally!

Finally one of our Chinese friends has decided to come clean about the racism inherent in all Chinese schools.

Now how do we look at our other Chinese friends in the face who have knowingly been hiding the truth. All in the name of a supposedly superior education and a leg up for their children over all the other Malaysian kids?

Can we ever trust them?

Will they ever give up their "pendatang mindset"?

My first clue that all was not right with Chinese schools was when mahatir supported the concept . Although his reasons were more to perpetuate that evil divide and rule strategy of his.

Close all Chinese schools! Or forever be seen as pendatangs my Chinese friends.

I was a former teacher of the Penang Chinese Girls' High School (PCGHS) and I can confirm what David said about Chinese Schools rejecting Indian male teachers who are posted to the school. PCGHS also has an unwritten rule about having male Indian teachers.

Don't believe me, just go to the school as check for yourself and see if you can find any male Indian teachers.

What was written by David is very true. I don't know if he is talking about my former school Phor Tay High School. I had teachers who used to tell us the same things mentioned by David.

I was in Chinese-medium schools from primary up to lower secondary level. None of my teachers ever told me what David said.

I then continued my upper secondary study in an English-medium school.

Upon graduating, I became a teacher in an Independent Chinese-medium secondary school. None of my colleagues ever tell those racist remarks to our students.

With due respect, I doubt if David is a Chinese. He must be a lier.

I have chinesse kids as old as 4 years being taught of racism by chinesse parent. This is true and absolute truth. I am a kindergarden teacher and I face the same discrimination. But I will whack the kids so that they wont grow up to be a racist chinesse. In short the chinese scream that the malays are racist, but it is akin to pot calling the kettle black. all are the same. shallow minded, may God help you racist people, who seems superior just because your colour is same as my faeces.

Better to be f**ked by a Malay or Indian than a dog like your mum was.

You are an excellent example of a product of the Chinese School.

thanks for speaking the truth - though not all are like that but a significant minority are.

David,
Your name in Chinese is " Da Wei",please do not generalize because your action has tarnished PCGHS,one of the top schools in Penang where your girl is studying there.

Racists come from everywhere and it dosen't neccessarily means that particular school is bad or it promotes racism.

the PCGHS is doing the right things for all its student well-being.all the others school should follow.

David,
You should approached those who have ill-advised your daughter about the jokes that you mentioned and not putting in writing because people will laugh at you for writing nonsense.

Before I went overseas to further my study,my mum advised me not to marry a Mak Salleh girl.Does it mean that my mum is also a racist ? God provide you with a brain to think and analyze. If you cannot make use of your brain, don't blame your parents !

How sad. when our country is in dire need of heroes to unite us, instead we have more villians and crybabies making things worse. This country really sucks. David, your interpretation of the events in the school does not reflect the general atmosphere of it. Shame on you for making such bold but careless accusation! Many of my friends were upset that you have potrayed them as racist!!!

Its sad to hear people at this age and time having this attitude, take note that please treat them as individuals and not as a race. There are racists everywhere and we would be making the same mistake in generalizing all Chinese educated and chine schools. Being an Indian i have had personal experience when attending a debate in a Chinese school. There were several racist name calling but the teachers and fellow students immediately apologized for the rude and crass behavior of that particular student.

I was called banana & traitor by a chinese school die-hard just a few days ago. What I did was speaking english to a fellow chinese guy.

In another occasion I went out makan with my malay and indian course mates at KFC. I was the only chinese in the group. There were a few chinese teenagers nearby, and I was looked upon like an alien by them. They said something really disgusting in mandarin about us and laughed at it among themselves. Little did they know that I understand every single word that they mentioned. (I took chinese in PMR and scored A)

These might be isolated cases but they demonstrate the fact that vernacular school students, without the chance of knowing and mixing with other races, tend to view them with a rigid, racist stereotype. Heck they even think english speakers like me are a disgrace to the "pure & superior" chinese race and shun us at every opportunity. WTF!

No one is stopping you from migrating to china if you hate the malays, indians and bananas so much. Enjoy your 5000 years of chinese civilisation and
china's superpower status that you always brag about like no others! Oh, last but not least, melamine-tainted milk for your babies !

To David - thank you for bringing up the elephant in the room (that is Malaysia). To the ones who deny that this happens and are giving David a hard time about speaking the truth - BITCHES PLEASE!! Those of you from Malaysia - OWN UP! There are so many of you that discriminate against the local Indian population too. And please, don't even say that this doesn't happen. Save it for the Ms. Chinese-World pageant cause this fag ain't listening. You want to end racism in Malaysia? Well news flash! It starts with YOU!

I am an Indian with an extended family substantially populated by Chinese members, including my wife. With my regular interactions with them, I have come to understand the Chinese mentality in general. Most Chinese are inherently racist because they have been traditionally indoctrinated from young that theirs is the superior race. This is why their prejudice against other races is not considered to be racism. Just superiority. This is also why they feel that it’s perfectly and justifiably right to rant against the ruling regime's racist policies while practicing racial discrimination themselves. This is how they conveniently and righteously live in denial of their racism. I have never encountered greater hypocrites than these Chinese who represent the majority outside the circle of my family and friends and I have lost my respect for the Chinese community as a whole. As long as this uncivilised attitude prevails, the dream of a truly 1Malaysia free from racism will forever be just that. An unfulfilled dream. If the Chinese expect to live in an egalitarian society, they should first learn humility, fairness and equality. Gandhi once said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Better to f a Malay? lol. As a Malay woman I am proud to have had a Chinese bf. He was a professional footballer of some years ago. His Malay language skills was just adorable because he spoke loghat Kelantan and he didn't seem to be fluent in English at all. I assumed though he spoke Chinese at home. He'd probably get stoned by some of his fellow Chinese for dating me but for me Chinese ke, Indian ke, Malay ke...as long as he accepts me and is kind, race is not a problem. Ok, admittedly he has to be gorgeous of course but then, gorgeous comes in many wrappers haha. Life is to short to not enjoy it.

Divide and conquer, the hostility between different races in Malaysia is the handy work of the white British. When British left Malaysia they applied the same trick as they did in India peninsula, planted the root of hatred between India and Pakistan for the next one thousand years. British made the Malay the benefactor and touch Malay to suppress the Chinese with political, social and economic injustice. If the British has ever read the postings here, they must be laughing their heads off seeing their handy work still working like a charm after 60 years. British must bet that the hostility they planted in Malaysia will continue to work as long as India is hostile to Pakistan.

Divide and conquer, the hostility between different races in Malaysia is the handy work of the imperialist white British when they were ordered out of Malaysia by the Yankees. It is the same trick the British set up for the people in India peninsula. The root of hatred the British planted between India and Pakistan was so deep that there will be no peace between those two people for another one thousand year. When the British left Malaysia they made the Malay the benefactor. They taught the Malay to suppress the Chinese politically, socially and economically. The Malays made it worse by making the Malaysia Chinese a second class citizen and an alien of their own homeland. If the British ever read the postings here, they will be laughing their heads off. The British can’t believe their handy work making different races at each other’s throat is still in full force even after they have departed 60 years already.

While I agree with some of the behaviours described by David, I cannot say that it generalized the whole community of Chinese. True, I have seen my share of those racist Chinese but bear in mind, they are not really the representatives of the Chinese community. Instead of spreading more hate, why don't we show these racists the true spirit of 1 Malaysia? The first step would be not followng their examples.
