The following email was sent to The Scribe by a student of Penang Free School. The Scribe finds that this email is of public interest as the writer of the email makes some very serious allegations against the schools Administrators and especially of one female Discipline Teacher SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN. The Scribe is aware that there is a clear cut guideline by the Ministry of Education that female students in secondary school are not supposed to be physically punished. What more if they are young women who have reached the age of consent. These are Form 6 students who are 18, 19 and 20 year old. The writer of the letter also claims that Form 6 male students are also caned by teachers including by SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN.
It is very frightening and disturbing that young men and women who have reached the age of consent are still caned in Malaysian schools such as Penang Free School. This young men and women are the future of our country. If they still need to be physically punished by teachers at such a mature age, then Malaysia has no future at all.
If these allegations are true, than SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN, the Principal Mr. Ramli Bin Din (pic above) and the schools Disciplinary Board ought to be sacked for condoning and carrying such punishments which goes against the Guidelines of the Ministry of Education. The Scribe calls on the students who are victims of the PFS sadistic teachers to lodge Police Reports and for the Ministry of Education to make a thorough investigation. The Scribe hopes that the Penang Free School authorities will come out and refute this very serious allegation. MarGeeMar will publish the PFS side of the story.
The following is the Letter from a Penang Free School student:
Dear Sir, I am a Penang Free School student. I want to complain and let the world know that this school canes Form Six girls. Thy also cane Form 6 boys. We know we are adults and yet we are caned by the teachers in this school. We feel humiliated to be slapped and caned by these teachers especially our discipline teacher PUAN SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN. She is not fit to be a teacher.
We know that it is against the law to hit Form Six student whether Male or Female but this school still does it. We are sick of being treated as kids. The male teachers even threaten to use the cane on the Form Six girls like hitting the cane hard on the desk where we sit. We hope someone out there will do something to help get our dignity back.

As a former PFS student I'm not surprised about the caning of female students. What more when you have a Taliban and Corrupted Principal Ramli Din calling the shots. The whole bunch including the bitch Sarojini ought to be sacked!

Are you sure? In PFS? I was a discipline teacher and later a SA Students affairs for many years, whether in all girls school,followed by all boys school and the last in a semi-urban coed secondary school. I have NEVER seen the need to cane the form 4 & 5 boys. But caning the girls? You mean the school administrator in PFS really did and the parents just remain silent? I find it really hard to believe.

The MACC should also check this Penang Free School Principal Ramli Din. The school appears to always have a lack of funds when it is a fully aided Government School. How come the students have to pay for the props of "The King and I" Play? And where has the RM 20,000 or so profits from the Play gone to? This Ramli person can't even speak proper English but yet gets promoted as Principal to a Premier School. Word has it, this Ramli has connections with Umno.

I'm an old free now, and I can also confirm what mentioned here is true indeed. Though I have no matters with the mentioned discipline teacher, I too have never looked to her as a role model..
As a music producer, I've produced the music for the previous plays for penang free school. Mind me, they weren't good paymasters who pay as promised and in time. I remember my payment got dragged nearly three months after the 'King & I' play.
I confirm the suspicion of the monetary of the play. And oh, standing for the truth, never afraid to show who I am. =)
Well, I think students in every secondary school these days shouldn't be cane because they are not kids anymore! But, if caning the right students and the caning system makes the disciplinary board of each school gets better, why not? That is, the caning mustn't be a fatal one. I am pretty sure, most of the teachers have their own children at home. They KNOW what it feels like.

If the parents don't even bother to teach their children HOW TO OBEY THE SCHOOL RULES at home, why should they care if they got caned because their children broke school rules. Parents have the responsibilities. In this case, it shouldn't be a fault of one side party. School admins, parents and students are in fault also.

Throughout my 5 years in the Grand Old Lady,I had been dealt by quite a number of discipline teachers be it individually or with a group of friends.They are none other than our hero Mr. Lim Ah Seng,Mr.Chuah Boon Yew(left PFS in 2004),Mr.Veloo(Mrs. Sarojini's husband.left PFS in 2006),Mrs. Sarojini,Mr. Goh Teng Keang(retired) Ustaz Suhaimi and Syamsul Anuar.
Until now I still cannot find a reason to respect Syamsul as he is rude,unfriendly and his face looks like punching bag to me.He shows no sign of respect to students,therefore no students respect him.I have had no problems with all the teachers named before him.They are people whom I look up to with respect.And yes this includes Mrs. Sarojini.

Honestly what I can say is,she's actually a nice person.Well yeah,obviously she has to be stern with you right if you get caught for your offence.If she goes, "Boy,why you do this?I give you one more chance.Dont repeat this anymore". I wasn't from this school but as i know this school was a branded school before and I don't know why suddenly this school change become like Islam school . Last time it used to be an english educated school . It was so damn famous ! But now ? I think the causes is from the pricipal .

But the fact that Ramli Bin Din, the current principle is destroying the pride of PFS as an english school is just sad and to make PFS an islamic school is just worst! Yes, they caned form6 girls for the most unvalid reasons. PFS is the most ridiculous school I have been to and I hope they will have some action against Sarojini. My whole class was canned because it was noisy. She doesn't care if it was the boys or who-so-ever... Everyone gets it. As for those boys who lingered around the school smoking or breaking rules, she doesn't even dare to land a hand on them. Shame on you. Please, don't send your children to that school.

Im an old free too... caning is in my opinion an effective method of disciplining our students, it prevented cigarettes and other negative influences in schools.. however, i see no reason to cane girls, young women the country.. is free school not the school of scholars, sportsmen and of course Gentlemen. there must be certain limits to the punishment of 6th former girls specifically...PFS is an all-boys school except for form six girls. The teachers in PFS must exercize reason in the punishment of 6th former girls in the school. It is not a pleasant sight for girls to be caned in public in full view of the other male students in the class. This treatment of women is equivalent to the so called "Islamic practise" of stoning a women to death.
Where is the dignity of women in this case? Mind you, these 6th formers are 18 and 19 years of age..they are by no means children anymore.
If we are to be fair..the first person that should be "caned" and has to face the music is the principal himself..he has let down the expectation of the students, parents and the state. The teachers make sure the students toe the line..then who make sure the teachers toe the line? Based on the performance of the school in academia and sports in recent years, it is fair to say that the principal and most of the teachers should be given the sack/resign voluntarily if you still have respect for yourself, for failing to maintain the standards of the school. We are talking about maintaining here..not improving.
It is a shame and disgrace that unqualified, inexperienced, ill-discipline teachers and principal is allowed to rule the school. PFS teachers & principal, before you start blaming the students, parents, government, public or the world for your failings...take a look in the mirror. I do not deny that parents play a big role in the development of a student. But academic results and sporting achievement of the school alone suggest that the teachers need to shoulder the responsibility for the failure of PFS. If ALL PFS teachers are committed to their duty and attend classes on time, prepare material before class and take the effort to do their best..i do not see any reason why PFS cannot maintain its standing.
In PFS, I have seen teachers who regularly skip lessons, leaving the class on its own. As a result, students wander around the school as the teacher is not around. These teachers could be found at the canteen, teacher's room, or their favourite hiding places (God, knows where) idling their time away chatting with fellow teachers who are similarly playing truant.
It is common for the monitor of the class to walk the entire school to find the teacher who is supposed to enter for that period. (that is if the monitor cares at all)
But the most important misgivings of almost all PFS teachers is their lack of passion to teach. Don't expect the students to be good if the teachers themselves are rotten. If YOU are an inspiration yourself, i doubt you need to cane the 6th form students to make them pay attention to you. You gain respect not by caning but by showing you care. And if you do not have enough care in you to be interested in the problems and challenges your students face, then you're not fit to be a teacher. I personally find the teaching profession to be very respectable. So if you're not up to mark..go back to teaching school and don't destroy the good name of other good teachers ( I direct this to the principal, Mr. Ramli and almost all the teachers in PFS...the students in PFS have eyes..and we know who the rotten teachers are)
Mr. Ramli, if you cannot speak proper English, i recommend that you do not waste your time trying to climb up the ladder of political success or teaching success. It is unlikely that students or anybody in that case would listen or care what you have to say if your English in rotten. I pray that PFS is as far as you go..and the rest is downhill for you for you have done a huge disservice to the school, the people, the country and the king.
But all that being said...the past 8 or so principals is no better off than the current Mr. Ramli. The rot needs to stop..but I don't think it'll be anytime soon with the corruption and croynism in place at PFS, MOE and the ruling federal government.

The key issue here is Penang Free School has to have a total revamped . Ramli has to be kicked out first!!

And I can assure you,PFS discipline teachers do not cane the innocent.They're not that brainless.
Another issue about the school being turned into an islamic school.yes,we old frees and ex-students are definitely very disappointed about it.why is there an Islamic hq office there?and also the Islamic writings in front of the main gate.it's on the more obvious and visible sight (from road users point of view) .from my previous visits to PFS,I can also see that the ratio of Malay students to Chinese and Indians are very significant as compared to previous years.This applies to teachers as well.and most of them seem like fresh grads.I can foresee that once the veterans such as Mrs Ruby,Mr.Ooi Eng Lye,Ms. Choong Lai Yoong,Mr Syed Sultan & a few others are gone ,the school would be out of GOOD teachers.
And students now are allowed to wear black leather shoes.this is just plain weird,making PFS look like a teknik school.the Board of Wardens were also disbanded back in 2008.it is said that the board will be renamed board of assistant prefects and lame reasons were given such as the term wardens does not fit for students and by the new name,it makes our testimonial more marketable.and again from my previous visits,I don't see any of them on duty during interval.is the board of assistant prefects gone as well ?
I can see that the school had done lots of renovations which is where lots of funds were used.some are not even necessary .I'll be visiting the school again soon and I'll try to get pics & post it up here

as a student at this school present,i think that caning students is appropriate. if you break the rules you should be punished. if not caned.what else retribution for the mistake they did? buang sekolah? gantung sekolah? that is just even more then appropriate but the cane only suitable for male students only. not for girls. they should think of a more appropriate punishment for the girl. but do not even give them a punishment, for me is very inappropriate. they will not realize their mistake. This is a school. they have rules for it. as a student no matter form 6 or other form we should follow the rules.the teachers will not caned a stdent if they are not guilty of the offense.
and as a senior at the school now, I also felt that the present principal, Mr Ramli is not suitable for handling high-class school. PFS status of cluster school not because of his administration, but from the previous principal. This school now being dropped due to his failure to handle the school. He only knows to speak about his vision but did not make anything to realizing what he was saying. he should be aware of his own weaknesses. He also used school money for his personal use. Do you think that bringing his family together in the students trip is appropriate? This clearly shows how good he was using school money.recently the government has announced 23 new high-performing schools to add 20 high-performing schools earlier. but unfortunately pfs failed to put themselves in the 23 schools listed. The school that used to be named among the first 30 clusters schools in the country failed to present themselves in the 43 high-performing schools. I feel that principals should resign from office after he reached age 56 in 2011. but because of his unconsciousness about how bad he had operating schools, he have continued his work until 2013 (age of 58). I can not think of what would happen to this school until 2013. the school's name might be erased from one of the elite schools in the country. as a students, I were very disappointed because he was not aware of his own bad . I really hope that if he reads this comment then he would think about his retirement that we are waiting for a long time. and I also hope that the OFA will express an opinion on his retirement. everyone has seen the fall of Penang Free School but sadly the principal failed to see these major thing.

Lol. i did form 6 in penang free. i say that there are certain crimes against school rules which require the punishment of the cane however in penang free it seems as though the minimum punishment is the cane.

i feel these are minor offences and another course of action could have been carried out.but what is worse in PFS is when they carry out acts of vandalism on students property, mainly speaking, motorcycles.it is a school rule that a motorcycle must stop at the gate and pushed in (though the distance isn't exactly short). many students go against this rule and ride in anyway.punishment for breaking this rule:flattening of students tires. and this is all done while students are in class and have no idea of it.i feel that this is not the right way of taking action against the student who has broken the rules.if u want to punish me, i say do it to my face and leave my things alone.i myself have had my tires flattened 4 times(in 1 and a half years) and the cost of having motorcycle tubes replaced are RM12 a pieces (though may seem little,money doesn't grow on trees) with risks of having the tire itself being damaged and having to be changed costing another RM80 a tire.in short Penang Free School has sadistic ways of making students follow the rules.glad i only spent my form 6 life there.

I am now an Old Free. I would suggest that you bring this matter up to the OFA and seek for the OFA's help if you have any direct issues that the school board isn't taking any action. I am sad to hear of such things going on. PFS is the shinning pearl in Penang education.

the glorious pfs was the past, thanks to those who attempted to spoil it. because of these people, the prefects (they are useless and they themselves break the rules yet the discipline teachers sided and protected them.. well whatever) all i can say now is everyone plays their own part. canning is not allowed in any schools since few years ago. students should avoid trouble whether you yourself caused or not. teachers(not all) should teach properly and enter their respective classes as scheduled (i've seen classes without teachers many times especially in form 3 and form 5 classes). THE PRINCIPAL, whether you wanna put up arabic words on the wall or what, it's non of my business BUT you shouldn't take out the english words because it shows that you're a racist.
in fact all the toilets are not functioning, how are we suppose to flush it? and why can't they create an open session for students and teachers to discuss these matters? who is to be blamed? the answer is ramli himself. don't try to blame the students because the teachers are not responsible.
1. teachers are not supposed to smoke in school. hiding in an unused toilet doesn't seem to help because in the end i found out about it.
2. teachers are supposed to master english and have a good command in it. i'm not racist but the malay teachers (not all) doesn't speak proper english and teach biology?? if you can't speak english then teach other subjects. no hard feelings.
3. i feel that the teachers should do their part (eg teaching the right thing, provide notes and explain clearly to the students and not leaving them behind and ask them to find their way to excellence and at least enter classes on time) if you can't do that, stop bugging the students and blame us for not playing our part. if you can blame us, why can't we blame you? the advice is here, if you can't take it then it's your lost; you'll never find your way to become a good teacher.
4. we are very used to it that students often commit offences but do we hear teachers having such problem? we students are different from you. you are a university graduate, do you think it is SHAMEFUL for yourself behaving in such a way? again, we are still secondary and tertiary students, on the other hand you are old enough to think what is right to do and not to do to set a good example for us. think about yourself before you grade the students.
5.ramli bin din. i don't care if you're a polygamy, but you must construct/repair/renovate/etc rationally. stop unnecessary talks during assembly and waste our time listening to your vision. "manusia yang hebat" his favourite phrase. anything inspirational or beneficial? i suggest that if you do not know what to say, keep it short. if not, talk about recent up-gradations or activities. stop nonsense talking.

Pick any PFS graduates, yes including ungrateful 6th formers like you, and you can see that they really do stand out amongst the normal people in society. PFS students are naturally loud and expressive and we are not afraid to voice out our opinions...as well as challenge others.
I have friends who only scored 2-3 As for their SPM and yet they possess more caliber than the other idiots that get straight As from other schools (especially chinese schools). That is because we are smarter and more complete as a person, than those so called A students that needs to take instructions from a book.
And yes it has always been a culture that the teachers generally dont teach much and we rely on tuition. We are not spoonfed, heck we are not even given spoons, and that makes us all the more better

To some of you what do you mean caning being efficient? The pain is just temporary. I personally wouldn't mind the caning but caning girls is plain stupid. cant beleive on this issue happends in PFS!!! caning yea it is a common in PFS but not on girls... During assembly of last year when lower 6 entered a lotz of bad comment and warning given to them but not expected till they could do it till such extend. After Ramli entered a lotz of things changed and happened... and none of it are bringing up the name of the school. I still remembered of what he said during one of the long long assembly, about achieveing his Visi and Misi at 2010 and be the best in this la and that la... and he too once promised if ppl don't like him, he said he would LEAVE the school

I think the MOE rules state clearly that girls cannot be caned.
PFS discipline problems atarted after 1970. Some male teachers b4 were able to control the problem students well.When MOE started to send graduate lady tchrs to all schools replacing the macho male college-trained tchrs, things began to deteriorate...remember Wilson Doss, Edward Liang n Batu-nathan, etc.
The university-trained tchrs say they are not trained to carry out petty duties of discipline or sports. They studied hard to do only do brain work in the class n not dirty their hands.Many stand under umbrellas when supervising sports la.Hahahahah...they have NO passion for teaching la!!
As ppl became more aware of their rights, they are able to vent their frustrations thru the internet and we get to know and start to panic.Really PFS is not so bad la.But it is fast becoming like Georgetown Sec Sch and Westland Sec School.
What prompts std to challenge the authority of their schools??Social problems, absent fathers, poverty, broken homes, grandparents and drugs or alcohol. So the discipline teachers job becomes extremely challenging and nobody wants to do it. What a torture it must be for this lady in PFS to straighten unruly boys and girls in an urban area school.I blame the new-age teachers who have very poor class control skills and they are the real problem.They just want to teach and go home and get a good name for themselves...60% are women. Its not well known that Chung Ling High School, Peng Hwa, Jit Sin and other chinese schools in Penang have empowered the discipline teachers to exert their absolute power over unruly students.Their rooms are bigger than the HM's room.No mercy shown for this problem boys or girls as students are worried of being sent off to PFS and other mixed schools who dont teach Mandarin!! I have nothing much to say about the caning of this form 6 girls but i certainly have something to say about what's happening inside the school from my 5 years experience with our 'dearest' principal...
i agree with a post stating that actually the cluster school title isn't ramli's work as from what i observed in the year 2006, he had done particularly nothing to improve the school as he was still new to that school....The cluster school title was awarded to pfs the following year and he was proud of it as if he alone had achieved the title without the help of the teachers and students(dated before 2006).
After that, i think what most human will commit this error if they aren't that careful; taking things for granted...
Yes, i can confirm that the school's standard is indeed decreasing but nothing is in fact done to correct it. The project carried out by our 'lovely' principal including chopping down at least three of 10 years and above trees at the pond area and the teachers' parking area...goverment of Penang, mark my words.
I'm understood that every cluster school receive RM 1,000,000 or more if i'm not mistaken( please correct me if i'm wrong), but he rather use those funds to buy instruments for the school band costing RM 100,000 over when he had the option of accepting the sponsor from a Datuk living nearby to PFS. Instead he refused the offer...after spending on this stuff and beautifying project, what's left??? I can say almost nothing...NOTHING!!! Not a word is said about improving the school's academic and co-curriculum..
For example, he only focus on the student bodies or clubs which can bring honour to the school, or in other word, so that he got face when his so-called puppets win. aren't PFS-borned student supposed to be an all rounder when it comes to sports?
For example, the basketball court. In the past, the school used quite a large amount of fund to build the court so that PFS students can excel in basketball. But the condition of the court now is an eyesore. The members had apply for funds from the school to repair the court but instead getting a reply from ramli, saying that you win a msspp national level for me, i repair for you...WTF is this wei???
Regarding the teachers, when i visit the school recently, most of the teachers aren't in the class even although the PNP is going on...

If you are a loyalist and you want to change, remove those who are responsible for the current predicament. Most of you are no longer the current students but ex-Free. Therefore its your decision to act or just your decision to just talk about things. Talk is cheap.
Speaking about the school's deteriorating physical conditions, the basketball court is seriously in need of repair. I have been to so many schools, orphanages and even neighborhood basketball courts, they are all in better condition than the one in the said school. The court itself is floored with gravel, the hoops are bent and the lines which are supposed to mark the distance are all gone. Not just the basketball court but the pond as well. Speaking truthfully, the pond is just useless. It is never clean, and it is always filled with crap. The toilets are filled with shit, literally. The can't flush. Even the canteen sinks are stuck with no water coming out. We have to go to the toilets and wash our hands there. Speaking of teachers, my maths teacher really is a fresh out of college type. She barely knows what she is talking about, so during maths time, I usually zone out and do my own work. If I payed attention in class, I am sure I would fail. I have got loads more complaints but I guess I'll stop here. Cheers,
