Civil Society in Action

P. Uthayakumar of the HRPM sees "Civil Society" in Malaysia as one big joke.

He sees Hindraf Makkal Sakthi and HRPM coming out in support of the Orang Asli, the Christians and the natives in Sabah and Sarawak, among others, but it's always a one-way traffic. He doesn't see any action, let alone even statements, from other marginalised communities and the minorities in support of Hindraf and HRPM. Among those remaining silent, he includes "the great Dr Jeffrey Kitingan".

Uthaya remembers once attending an anti-apartheid rally in London in front of the South African Embassy. "Ninety eight per cent of the demonstrators were whites," recalls Uthaya. " That's Civil Society in Action. When something is wrong, no matter who it involves, you not only speak out but stand up to be counted in support."

So, Anwar Ibrahim's Masyarakat Madani, Najib's 1M'sia and Lim Kit Siang's Middle M'sia "are all just plain rubbish, humbuggery of the highest order and racist", according to Uthaya.

He wants those who want to prove him wrong to assemble in front of the KLCC on Sun 27Feb in support of Hindraf's and HRPM's rally against racism, racial prejudice, racial polarisation, marginalisation and disenfranchisement in Malaysia.

Arab Spring could be Al Qaeda's fall

When historians in future years grapple with the significance of the overthrow of the Mubarak regime in Egypt 10 days ago, coming as it did in the wake of the "Jasmine" January 14 Revolution in Tunisia, they may judge it not only as a seismic event, shattering and renewing the Arab political order, but also the key watershed moment in confronting the global al Qaeda threat.

The political, economic, and cultural stagnation that al Qaeda fed off for more than two decades has been replaced by the fastest moving change the region has ever witnessed, the most promising of Arab Springs.

The burgeoning democracy movement across the Middle East appears to have caught al Qaeda off guard and threatens to reduce the terrorist group to irrelevance.

"If you have freedom, al Qaeda will go away," said Osama Rushdi, a former Egyptian jihadist.

"Al Qaeda can work under a dictatorship regime, but I think if we open the door for all people to be part of society and have human rights, then there will be security not just in Egypt but around the world," Rushdi

But others caution that the coming years will not be without dangers.

In the case of Yemen, for example, some have suggested that protests may weaken the government's ability to confront al Qaeda's growing presence in the tribal areas of the country.

Furthermore, the weakening of security services throughout the Arab world may allow jihadist groups like al Qaeda in the medium-term to rebuild capabilities, warns Noman Benotman, a former Libyan jihadist once personally acquainted with al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri.

"This is a make or break moment for al Qaeda," said Benotman, now a senior analyst at the Quilliam Foundation, a UK counter-extremist think tank.

In the short term, Benotman says, al Qaeda will need to navigate strong countervailing winds. The clamor by protesters from North Africa to the Gulf for more democracy is hardly change al Qaeda can believe in.

"What we see playing out now is completely against what al Qaeda is preaching," Benotman said.

In an April 2008 online Q&A with supporters, al Qaeda's No. 2 Zawahiri wrote that the only alternative to the Mubarak regime was setting up an Islamic state in Egypt, by which he meant an al Qaeda-style theocracy.

"Change (in Egypt) is coming -- with Allah's permission -- without a doubt, for this corrupt, rotten regime cannot possibly continue. The important thing is getting ready for change and being patient in that and preparing to accept sacrifices, then making use of the opportunities," he wrote.

But now, faced with a script they never expected, al Qaeda's top leadership could be in danger of losing the plot.

The televised scenes of secular, middle-class youngsters and Egyptians from all walks of life courageously, peacefully and ultimately successfully challenging the rule of President Hosni Mubarak have been transmitted onto tens of millions of television screens across the Arab world and have captured the imagination, providing vastly more attractive role models for young Arabs, whose hopes for too long have been strangled.

Delayed response from al Qaeda's No. 2

From Zawahiri, who has regularly weighed in on political events in Egypt, there finally appeared to be a reaction -- of sorts -- to the Egyptian protests in a tape released on the Internet pn Friday.

In the audio statement, al Qaeda's No. 2 neither directly acknowledges the protests nor the removal from power of Mubarak, instead referring to "what happened and happens in Egypt." The statement was dated the second Islamic lunar month of Safar, which corresponded to the period between January 6 and February 3, indicating that it was recorded at least a week before Mubarak left office. Demonstrations gathered pace in Egypt on January 25.

In his statement, Zawahiri as usual railed against the Mubarak regime but also criticized democracy as a system of government, hardly sentiment that endeared him to the millions thronging that day into Tahrir Square and other locations in Egypt to celebrate a "Day of Joy."

Self-preservation may explain Zawahiri's slow response.

According to data provided to CNN by IntelCenter, an American company that tracks al Qaeda statements, Zawahiri two years ago managed to get messages out as quickly as 10 days after a news event. But in the past year, his fastest response time was 32 days, suggesting that intensified U.S. drone strikes in the tribal areas of Pakistan may have pushed him into deeper hiding.

When he recorded the just-released message, it was possible that events could still play into his hands. During the first days of February the stakes in Egypt's Tahrir Square for al Qaeda and the United States could hardly have been higher.

As the protests gathered strength, it appeared possible that the Mubarak regime might move to crush the demonstrators and that Arab street protesters would view the United States as complicit.

Such a crackdown, and the frustration of raised expectations across the region, could have created a newly receptive climate for al Qaeda's key propaganda message -- that the United States deliberately props up Middle Eastern dictatorships to prevent the emergence of an Islamic world power -- and no doubt Zawahiri and other al Qaeda leaders would have exploited it to try to win recruits. But the ground shifted, Mubarak fell, and the United States strengthened its support for the demonstrators, hollowing out the al Qaeda narrative.

When in the coming weeks Zawahiri finally acknowledges Mubarak's exit, he will probably be seen by most Egyptians as more out of touch than ever. "He has no popularity in Egypt anymore," said Rushdi, the former Egyptian jihadist.

Rushdi spent time with Zawahiri in Peshawar in the late 1980s and remembers how Zawahiri and a number of other Egyptians with key leadership positions within al Qaeda influenced the worldview of bin Laden and pushed his fledgling organization toward armed confrontation with Arab regimes.

Rushdi does not mince his words: "Mubarak is responsible for most of the problem of al Qaeda," he said.

However that claim is judged, what is clear is that many of the Egyptians in Peshawar at the time of al Qaeda's creation in 1988 had been radicalized by harsh treatment in Mubarak's prisons. And Zawahiri's anger against the ally of the regime that imprisoned and tortured him would later help fuel al Qaeda's decision to launch the September 11 attacks.

Rushdi says the end of the Mubarak regime will prevent men like Zawahiri from again emerging in Egypt.

Benotman, the former Libyan jihadist, cautions against jumping to such conclusions. He stresses that regime change is far from complete in Tunisia and Egypt. He argues that as long as Western-backed armed forces continue to dominate politics across the region, al Qaeda's message will continue to hit home for some, adding that those who are already ideologically committed to al Qaeda's Global Jihad are unlikely to be swayed by current events.

The past 10 days demonstrated that events can take unpredictable turns, offering up opportunities for Islamist terrorist groups.

In Libya, an ongoing deadly crackdown on protesters could provide an opportunity to al Qaeda and regional affiliates to gain new recruits. Radicalization in recent years has run high in Libya, especially in its eastern provinces. While the Iraqi insurgency was at its peak, more young men traveled from Libya to join al Qaeda in Iraq than from any country apart from Saudi Arabia.

As protests sweep the region, nowhere is U.S national security more at stake than in Yemen, from where al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has twice launched attempts to attack the U.S. homeland in the last 14 months.

There is a danger that the recent deadly assaults on protesters in Sanaa by pro-government elements could be exploited by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in the coming weeks to win recruits for its intensfying campaign against security services in the country, especially if the death toll rises and the protest movement is crushed. President Ali Abdullah Saleh's close counter-terrorism cooperation with the United States would allow al Qaeda to weave such a crackdown into its propoganda narrative of American-backed dictatorships oppressing Muslim populations.

There is also a danger that if demonstrations gather force and there is a precipitous and chaotic end to Saleh's 33-year rule, al Qaeda may have, at least in the short term, an opportunity to extend its safe haven in the country.

In the Gulf state of Bahrain, a key U.S. ally hosting the headquarters of the United States Fifth Fleet, any repeat of last week's deadly crackdown on demonstrators could also be exploited by al Qaeda, even if many (but by no means all) of those demonstrating are from the country's majority but disenfrachised-feeling Shiite community. The group have often been targeted by al Qaeda and likeminded groups across the Muslim world because their views are seen as heretical.

Future opportunities for jihadists

Benotman says that with the weakening of security services in some Arab countries, the greatest future opportunities may lie for jihadist groups with a narrow regional agenda rather than those like al Qaeda focused on attacking the United States and its Western allies.

According to Benotman, one of the groups that may try to rebuild its activities in Egypt is Zawahiri's very own group: Egyptian Islamic Jihad.

Zawahiri fused his group with al Qaeda shortly before September 11 and aligned it with bin Laden's Global Jihad, against the desire of some within the group who wanted to carry on focusing on operations in Egypt.

Earlier this month, what appears to be a breakaway faction of Egyptian Islamic Jihad issued a statement on the situation in Egypt, calling for the "elimination of the Pharaoh and his lackeys." The statement was issued from Iran under the name of Tharwat Salah Shehata.

Benotman -- who met Shehata, an Egyptian lawyer turned jihadist, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2000 -- says he was a leading figure in the group in the 1990s.

Shehata, according to Benotman, opposed the group's merger with al Qaeda and vied with Zawahiri for leadership of the group in the years before September 11. Shehata and several other members of Egyptian Islamic Jihad appear to have eventually found safe haven in Iran.

The new Egyptian Islamic Jihad statement, says Benotman, represents a relaunching of the group's campaign to create an Islamic state in Egypt. Given the geopolitical standoff between Iran and Egypt, Benotman says it is likely that Iranian authorities gave tacit approval for the group to issue the communiqué.

If Benotman is right, this may be the start of a shift by some Islamist militant groups back toward attempts to topple regimes in the Arab world, weakened by the events of the past weeks.

Some argue that it was the successful repression of jihadist groups by the security forces of Arab regimes that led al Qaeda to target the United States in the first place. Forced into exile in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan, men like Zawahiri came to view the United States as the main barrier to the creation of new Islamic order at home.

"Mubarak exported Egypt's problems to the whole world," said Rushdi, the former Egyptian jihadist.

Outside Yemen, it may prove difficult for jihadist groups to gain traction. Violent campaigns by Islamist militants in Algeria and Egypt in the 1990s turned the vast majority of the population against them. Furthermore, decades of repression by security services destroyed many jihadist groups' capabilities or restricted them to remote areas like the Sahel region south of Algeria and Egypt's Sinai Desert.

Additionaly, in some countries, like Libya, reconciliation efforts have reduced the risk of a return to violence because they removed from the scene established jihadist outfits capable of recruiting and organizing radical-leaning youth. Several former members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group were released Wednesday as a part of an ongoing peace process initiated by Saif al Islam Gadhafi, the son of Libya's leader, which saw the group renounce violence in Libya.

What jihadist groups should fear

But what such jihadist groups should fear most is a real and sustained transition toward democracy, broad-based economic opportunity and freedom of expression in the Arab world. Far fewer young Arabs would probably then be attracted to violent Islamist ideology. Like the protesters of Tahrir Square, they would find meaning, purpose and opportunities in other causes.

Change, of course, will not come overnight. And in some Arab countries, even if pro-democracy demonstrators prevail, political transformation will probably take many years to achieve. Yemen is a case in point because of its weak state institutions, lack of an educated middle class and strong tribal structures. But if there is a pan-Arab political opening, the momentum will be strongly against al Qaeda.

The events in the Arab world may also have an impact on homegrown extremism in the West.

In Europe, radical Islamist preachers have been able to prey on a sense of identity loss, discrimination and alienation experienced by second- and third-generation Muslim immigrants from the Arab world and South Asia. Their message has been that such youngsters should devote themselves to efforts to remove an oppressive Western presence from the Muslim world so that a theocratic Islamic Golden Age can be recreated.

But at a time when images of Tahrir Square rather than American tanks are dominating Al Jazeera and other news outlets popular amongst immigrant communities in Europe, that radical vision may start to lose its luster. Moreover, it will be harder for radical preachers to sell the line that Western-style democracy is inherently anti-Muslim and un-Islamic, if Arab diaspora communities see it empowering their relatives on the southern shores of the Mediterranean.

If the winds are indeed changing from an era of Islamist militancy to democracy in the Middle East, nothing is more illustrative of this than the story of Osama Rushdi, the former Egyptian jihadist interviewed for this piece.

Previously the spokesman of Gamma Islamiya, an armed Egyptian Jihadist group, Rushdi resigned from the group in the mid-1990s, renounced violence and has in recent years worked closely together with a range of Egyptian opposition figures in the UK, including secular liberal intellectuals under the auspices of the Save Egypt Front to bring constitutional democracy to Egypt. Last year, he even helped organize a conference in London for Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Prize laureate and potential Egyptian presidential candidate, and he now hopes to return to Egypt.

"The Egyptian young people created one of biggest wonderful peaceful civilian revolutions, so now they are proud about themselves and demand a civilian state and democratic institutions," Rushdi said.

In the long term, a successful democratic transition in the Arab world would arguably make the United States significantly safer from al Qaeda terrorism. The threat of attack would remain because, as September 11 illustrated, even a small group of dedicated individuals can create terrible carnage, and al Qaeda today continues to enjoy safe havens in Pakistan and Yemen from where it can organize new attacks. But if al Qaeda's recruiting efforts are significantly hampered, so will its campaign of global terrorism.

MarGeeMar is willing to give space to the PFS Administrators to defend themselves against such serious allegations but until now, they have failed to do so. The Scribe encourages those who have made these serious allegations against the PFS School Administrators to report the matter to the Police and MACC.

Pengetua Ramli Din memang tidak layak menjadi Pengetua Sekolah seperti PFS. Little Taliban ini telah menukarkan identiti sekolah PFS memnerusi proses Pengislamannya. Mengapakah Pejabat Agama Islam Timur laut perlu berkongsi premis dengan Sekolah PFS?

Disamping itu mengapakah pelajar yang telah berkorban untuk sekolah PTS dipaksa membayar dari poket mereka sendiri untuk prop yang disewa untuk 'Anna and The King'? Dimanakah keuntungan yang diperoleh dari pementasan ini, Ramli?

The MACC should also check this Penang Free School Principal Ramli Din. The school appears to always have a lack of funds when it is a fully aided Government School. How come the students have to pay for the props of "The King and I" Play? And where has the RM 20,000 or so profits from the Play gone to? This Ramli person can't even speak proper English but yet gets promoted as Principal to a Premier School. Word has it, this Ramli has connections with Umno.

I'm an old free now, and I can also confirm what mentioned here is true indeed. Though I have no matters with the mentioned discipline teacher, I too have never looked to her as a role model..
As a music producer, I've produced the music for the previous plays for penang free school. Mind me, they weren't good paymasters who pay as promised and in time. I remember my payment got dragged nearly three months after the 'King & I' play.
I confirm the suspicion of the monetary of the play. And oh, standing for the truth, never afraid to show who I am. =)

Yes, they caned form6 girls for the most unvalid reasons. PFS is the most ridiculous school I have been to and I hope they will have some action against Sarojini. My whole class was canned because it was noisy. She doesn't care if it was the boys or who-so-ever... Everyone gets it. As for those boys who lingered around the school smoking or breaking rules, she doesn't even dare to land a hand on them. Shame on you. Please, don't send your children to that school.

there must be certain limits to the punishment of 6th former girls specifically...PFS is an all-boys school except for form six girls. The teachers in PFS must exercize reason in the punishment of 6th former girls in the school. It is not a pleasant sight for girls to be caned in public in full view of the other male students in the class. This treatment of women is equivalent to the so called "Islamic practise" of stoning a women to death.

Where is the dignity of women in this case? Mind you, these 6th formers are 18 and 19 years of age..they are by no means children anymore.

If we are to be fair..the first person that should be "caned" and has to face the music is the principal himself..he has let down the expectation of the students, parents and the state. The teachers make sure the students toe the line..then who make sure the teachers toe the line? Based on the performance of the school in academia and sports in recent years, it is fair to say that the principal and most of the teachers should be given the sack/resign voluntarily if you still have respect for yourself, for failing to maintain the standards of the school. We are talking about maintaining here..not improving.

It is a shame and disgrace that unqualified, inexperienced, ill-discipline teachers and principal is allowed to rule the school. PFS teachers & principal, before you start blaming the students, parents, government, public or the world for your failings...take a look in the mirror. I do not deny that parents play a big role in the development of a student. But academic results and sporting achievement of the school alone suggest that the teachers need to shoulder the responsibility for the failure of PFS. If ALL PFS teachers are committed to their duty and attend classes on time, prepare material before class and take the effort to do their best..i do not see any reason why PFS cannot maintain its standing.

In PFS, I have seen teachers who regularly skip lessons, leaving the class on its own. As a result, students wander around the school as the teacher is not around. These teachers could be found at the canteen, teacher's room, or their favourite hiding places (God, knows where) idling their time away chatting with fellow teachers who are similarly playing truant.

It is common for the monitor of the class to walk the entire school to find the teacher who is supposed to enter for that period. (that is if the monitor cares at all)

But the most important misgivings of almost all PFS teachers is their lack of passion to teach. Don't expect the students to be good if the teachers themselves are rotten. If YOU are an inspiration yourself, i doubt you need to cane the 6th form students to make them pay attention to you. You gain respect not by caning but by showing you care. And if you do not have enough care in you to be interested in the problems and challenges your students face, then you're not fit to be a teacher. I personally find the teaching profession to be very respectable. So if you're not up to mark..go back to teaching school and don't destroy the good name of other good teachers ( I direct this to the principal, Mr. Ramli and almost all the teachers in PFS...the students in PFS have eyes..and we know who the rotten teachers are)

Mr. Ramli, if you cannot speak proper English, i recommend that you do not waste your time trying to climb up the ladder of political success or teaching success. It is unlikely that students or anybody in that case would listen or care what you have to say if your English in rotten. I pray that PFS is as far as you go..and the rest is downhill for you for you have done a huge disservice to the school, the people, the country and the king.


But all that being said...the past 8 or so principals is no better off than the current Mr. Ramli. The rot needs to stop..but I don't think it'll be anytime soon with the corruption and croynism in place at PFS, MOE and the ruling federal government.

This Seng person is none other than Penang Free School Discipline Teacher Lim Ah Seng. Both Pengetua Ramli and Sarojini have no guts to reply to this Blog as they know what has been said so far is true about PFS. Those who comment and claim that the allegations made against PFS is not true and are claiming to be students and ex-students of PFS are probably Ramli's cronies. I AM CURRENTLY STUDYING AT PENANG FREE SCHOOL (PFS) AND I CAN CONFIRM THAT THE COMMENT ABOVE IS TRUE. I HAVE SEEN DISCIPLINE TEACHER LIM AH SENG FORCING STUDENTS (NOT PREFECTS) TO FLATTEN STUDENTS MOTORCYCLE TYRE.

DOESN'T MR LIM KNOW THAT SUCH ACTIONS CAN PUT STUDENTS LIVES AT RISK WHILE ON THE ROAD?

Fourth, and the worst factor that makes the theme difficult is the state
of Muslim *internal* crisis of the loss of /adab /(discipline) amongst
themselves a situation that has already produced a chronic state of
psychological emotionalism, intellectual literalism and social over
reactionism generated through ages of injustices inflicted upon the
Muslim populace both externally and internally mostly by the Muslim
governments themselves.

In our crises, the blame should be first laid on the Muslims themselves.
There has always been a form of Islamic Machiavellian politics led by
Muslim totalitarian governments who to rest in power would create tribal
and religious tensions and indoctrinate their peoples into a high degree
of emotionalism.
Islam broke world records of genocide, slavery, religiously sanctioned
rape, abuse of human rights, and prohibition of scientific inquiry. It
forbids Muslim emigration to the lands of the infidels because a
Muslim minority cannot enslave the infidel majority. Despite this
prohibition Muslims emigrate to the West, not as migrants, but as
conquerors. They live in sharia mini-states and expand these mini-
states by terrorizing infidel neighbors and driving them out.

In Defense Of Penang Free School & Caning of Female Students

Throughout my 5 years in the Grand Old Lady,I had been dealt by quite a number of discipline teachers be it individually or with a group of friends.They are none other than our hero Mr. Lim Ah Seng,Mr.Chuah Boon Yew(left PFS in 2004),Mr.Veloo(Mrs. Sarojini's husband.left PFS in 2006),Mrs. Sarojini,Mr. Goh Teng Keang(retired) Ustaz Suhaimi and Syamsul Anuar.

Until now I still cannot find a reason to respect Syamsul as he is rude,unfriendly and his face looks like punching bag to me.He shows no sign of respect to students,therefore no students respect him.I have had no problems with all the teachers named before him.They are people whom I look up to with respect.And yes this includes Mrs. Sarojini.

You can hardly find a female discipline teacher in an all-boys-school right?See how huge her responsiblity is.She has to toughen up so that PFS boys do not dominate her.Why?Most of the Frees are a real pain in the ass.Now tell me,how many female teachers can do that,instilling fear amongst rebellious teenage boys?

She had graffitis of her with vulgar remarks all over the school.Almost in every cubicle of the toilet,walls etc.And as seen here,two readers who commented,calling her a bitch.Can you withstand this?Carry on with your responsibilities as a discipline teacher and strive to be better?

Honestly what I can say is,she's actually a nice person.Well yeah,obviously she has to be stern with you right if you get caught for your offence.If she goes, "Boy,why you do this?I give you one more chance.Dont repeat this anymore". Goner,PFS students will see this as a green light to do it again and again.

I bet the one(s) behind this post to defame her and also from the previous comments were all students who got caught for their offence,their case being handled by Mrs. Sarojini ,got caned by her and are now still unhappy about it.Some even hate her for no reason,just to go with the flow.

IMO,it is normal to cane students for their offences.Come on current PFS students are you all not MAN enough to take it?Then why break the rules?We have been through many of it.Students now are more extreme than the ones in the past.Come on,why give the discipline teachers a hard time?They do the right thing and what they get in return is hatred from you guys.

Kenapa gejala ini berlaku di Bahrain?
1) Kuasa penindasan oleh pihak kerajaan
2) Pengangguran yang tinggi
3) Pendapatan sangat sedikit, malah inflasi
4) Perut rakyat lapar, miskin,
5) Kerajaan mengawal internet

Hakim Islam yang porak peandakan keadilan? Bila di sentuh kezaliman di negara Islam ,maka Melayu Islam pula menujukan faktanya dan menyalahkan Amerika, Nasrani, Yahudi , Zionist , golongan anti Islam, Musuh Islam...... ingin memusnahkan perpaduan Islam。 Ini lah jawapan yang tidak masuk akal.

They Cane Form 6 Girls At Penang Free School???

The following email was sent to The Scribe by a student of Penang Free School. The Scribe finds that this email is of public interest as the writer of the email makes some very serious allegations against the schools Administrators and especially of one female Discipline Teacher SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN. The Scribe is aware that there is a clear cut guideline by the Ministry of Education that female students in secondary school are not supposed to be physically punished. What more if they are young women who have reached the age of consent. These are Form 6 students who are 18, 19 and 20 year old. The writer of the letter also claims that Form 6 male students are also caned by teachers including by SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN.

It is very frightening and disturbing that young men and women who have reached the age of consent are still caned in Malaysian schools such as Penang Free School. This young men and women are the future of our country. If they still need to be physically punished by teachers at such a mature age, then Malaysia has no future at all.

If these allegations are true, than SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN, the Principal Mr. Ramli Bin Din (pic above) and the schools Disciplinary Board ought to be sacked for condoning and carrying such punishments which goes against the Guidelines of the Ministry of Education. The Scribe calls on the students who are victims of the PFS sadistic teachers to lodge Police Reports and for the Ministry of Education to make a thorough investigation. Dear Sir, I am a Penang Free School student. I want to complain and let the world know that this school canes Form Six girls. Thy also cane Form 6 boys. We know we are adults and yet we are caned by the teachers in this school. We feel humiliated to be slapped and caned by these teachers especially our discipline teacher PUAN SAROJINI A/P KUTTI KRISHNAN. She is not fit to be a teacher.

We know that it is against the law to hit Form Six student whether Male or Female but this school still does it. We are sick of being treated as kids. The male teachers even threaten to use the cane on the Form Six girls like hitting the cane hard on the desk where we sit. We hope someone out there will do something to help get our dignity back.

I don’t really know who Rachel Motte is, or why she suddenly has become an expert on Malaysia in the past year. But I do know that she wrote an article about me recently, saying that I am “a pet” of Anwar Ibrahim, who – according to her – has “direct connections to terrorist organizations” and a long history of being an anti-Semite.

I also know that – to her credit – when I contacted Rachel on February 12 and told her that I believed that her article was inaccurate and potentially libelous, she immediately took it down for review. It no longer is on her website, and I thank her for that.

But I also know that Utusan Malaysia has reported her article verbatim – and even went to the trouble of translating it into Malay. And thanks to Dato Din Merican, now I know that the NST has chosen to print it as well.

Motte’s Article: Why Libelous
Here are the problems with the article, and why I believe that I would be well within my rights to sue the NST, Utusan Malaysia, and others for libel. As someone who has been in public life for over 40 years, I know very well that anything I do, say, or write is open to examination. So that is why I am always very careful to have documentation for everything I say. We can disagree on the analysis, but not on the facts.

Motte’s Article: Anwar’s “Pet”? I am Nobody’s Pet

When I took a look at Rachel’s article, I had two major areas of concern. First, Rachel characterized my relationship with Anwar as being his “pet.” This is offensive to me, as I served my nation for over 30 years as an Ambassador, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, and Consul General under seven Presidents. It would be like me calling Dato Johan Jaffar the lapdog of UMNO. I am Nobody’s pet.

Second, there were many statements that to my mind are libelous: (a) that I am defending “a man with direct ties to terrorist organizations, and a man whose anti-Semitic comments and conspiracy theories are too long to discuss;”

(b) that “rational thinking men and women are able to discern the difference between good and bad individuals, people you should support, versus those you should distance yourself from,” implying that I am not a rational thinking person; and

(c) that I am “blinded by [my] support of an anti-Semite with clear and undeniable ties to an organization that supports terrorism.”

As a former Ambassador to Malaysia, I had access to intelligence reports, and I can say categorically that Anwar does not have ties to any terrorist organizations. Furthermore, Anwar continues to be a friend of former Vice President Al Gore, former Secretary of Defense William “Bill” Cohen, and former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz.

None of these gentlemen would continue their relationship with Anwar if he had ties to terrorists. Furthermore, Anwar would not be admitted to the US if he had such a connection (and he was here last week). Furthermore, Paul Wolfowitz (who is Jewish) would not be Anwar’s friend if Anwar were anti-Semitic.

In a libel case, the burden of proof will be on NST and the others to prove that Anwar has terrorist ties and that he has a long history of anti-Semitic comments. By publishing Rachel’s article, after she removed it from her website, the NST has asserted something that it cannot prove. It has claimed that I am defending a terrorist and an anti-Semite.

These former senior USG officials would support and defend me, based on their knowledge and access to official USG records. The only “evidence” that Rachel and the NST will have will be blog postings that have circulated over the past few years, as part of a campaign to smear Anwar and discredit his reputation and standing in the United States.

For example, the efforts of Jack Abramoff and others to smear Anwar – a multi-million campaign funded by the Malaysian Government — were well-documented in US Senate hearings conducted by Senator John McCain. We also know, according to The Washington Post newspaper, that APCO was engaged in a similar effort last year, paid for by the Malaysian Government, according to APCO’s official filings.

Rachel says that Anwar’s connections to terrorist organizations are because he was a founder of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), which is based in Virginia. Like many other Islamic/Muslim groups, the IIIT was raided by the FBI after 9/11 and was investigated thoroughly. The US Government never filed any charges against IIIT. The US Government has never listed it as a terrorist organization, and the US Government has never closed it down. Yet the charges of an IIIT connection to the Muslim Brotherhood continue to circulate, without evidence, on various right-wing blogs. What do these bloggers know that the US Government does not? Does the NST take the word of unknown bloggers over the US Government? What evidence can the NST present in court in a libel case?

Anwar’s so-called long record of anti-Semitism!

Rachel’s other claim was what she called Anwar’s long record of anti-Semitism. She said that I am supporting an anti-Semite. The reality is, there is no long list of anti-Semitic comments by Anwar Ibrahim. Indeed, throughout his political career, Anwar often has been accused of being close to Jews. For example, Ian Buruma recounts two stories in his New Yorker article on Anwar. (http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/05/18/090518fa_fact_buruma)

The first is that when Anwar was kicked out of the Cabinet in 1998, Mahathir – who had accused George Soros and the Jews of causing the 1997 Asian financial crisis – briefed the Cabinet on Anwar’s Jewish connections, pointing out that his friends were people like Robert (Bob) Rubin, Bill Cohen, James (Jim) Wolfensohn, Paul Wolfowitz, and so on. All American Jews. The second Buruma story is Mahathir’s famous comment that Anwar would make a “good Prime Minister of Israel.”

Rachel wrote an article, “The Reversal of Anwar Ibrahim,” claiming that Anwar had become an anti-Semite, in the New Ledger blog on April 29, 2010. But two months later Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin undercut her thesis and his own Government’s efforts to portray Anwar as anti-Semitic when he said on July 1, “We know for a fact his ties with pro-Zionist groups.”

According to The Washington Post, the Malaysian Embassy and APCO worked hard last year to publicize Anwar’s comments on “Zionist aggression,” after the May 31 Israeli action against the relief ship Mavi Marmara. But for reasons that are very understandable, the Malaysian Government did not want to call attention to Najib’s own remarks, which were even stronger, accusing the Israelis of terrorism. Najib also said that, “The Israeli commandos shot the activists point blank and even from the back, and this is an act of a coward which cannot be forgiven. Anwar’s comments last year caused a lot of problems, but to say that he has a long history of anti-Semitism, and that I therefore am linked to an anti-Semite, is wrong. Dalam revolusi ini, tanpa kira agama , mahupun kaum kristian keluar memberontak, kaum Islam juga bagi sokongan, rakyat beragama Islam yang mati dibunuh juga disokong oleh kaum yang beragama kristian, tanpa agama, keturunan, warna kulit, rakyat bersatu atas nama keadilan. rakyat yang tanpa senjata dapat menumpuh hingga Mubarak larikan diri.

Pada 14 hari bulan Februari, adalah dianggarkan Hari Valentine, hari yang mulia akan dirayai oleh kaum muslim, kaum kristian dan puak minoriti sekaligus, Kenapa pula hari Valentine diguanakan sebagai acara menghuduhkan kaum lain atau mengaibkan dengan penganut Kristian? Adakah Penganut Islam di Malaysia ini leih superior dari penganut Islam di Mesir? Mahu tidak mahu , pandangan dunia menganggap Melayu Islam memperekehkan budaya asing adalah satu tindakan yang membuka pintu dalam fahaman Taliban, kalau tidak pun Melayu Islam lah juara memperajui islamphbia, menakut nakutkan dunia luar, bahawa Malaysia adalah tempat perjuangan extreemist.

Kenapa hendak lancarkan kempen anti Valentine? padahal melayu yang gilakan maksiat tapi tboeh menyalahi budaya asing yang mendorong mereka lakukan kesalahan yang bercanggah dengan Islam. Pendek kata apa yang dilakukan oleh kaum Melayu Islam mesti ada sebab untuk menghadapi kenyataan, mereka seolah olah boleh cari sebab menyalahkan budaya lain.

Harus diingatkan Melayu inii suatu bangsa yang kurang budaya, boleh dikatakan semua budaya Melayu adalah budaya pinjaman, dimana budaya turun menurun pun tidak ada aasal usul, semua dicampur gaul macam rojak , tetapi Melayu sendiri yang terlupa diri mereka budaya mereka, malah ingin jadikan Islam sebagai budaya, Islam adalah agama, pegangan tetapi bukanlah budaya, Melayu cuma tahu meniru buaya padang pasir, itu lah sebabnya terikut ikut dengan budaya jahiliah yang membuang bayi di merata tempat.

Pakar motivasi ini kata: ``isteri tidak seharusnya membenarkan lelaki bukan mahrim memasuki rumahnya ketika suami tiada di rumah, begitu juga halnya dengan perbuatan isteri berbual dengan lelaki lain menerusi Internet, seumpama membenarkan individu itu memasuki rumahnya, seterusnya merosakkan rumah tangga.''

Kita tanyakan soalan kepada beliau , kalau isteri tu tak gatal, macam pakai tudung, dan tutup aurat, ehmabhyang kuat dan tunggu masuk syurga setiba akhirat, melalui internet beliau dapa menyampaikan ajaran islam kepada semua golongan , mahu pun melalui skype. Jadi apa salahnya internet ini?

Rrumah tangga Melayu ini pecah belah bukan apa. bukan salah internet , pada hal salahkan sikap melayu yang pandai kongket, nak cari lelaki yang lebih tampan , kaya dan beri jaminan hidup mewah, faktor ekonomi lah yang mendorong melayu kuat rasuah. mncari kemewahan hidup lalu lakukan curang, dan tidak semestinya berkhalwat di internet,, sebaliknya internet cumalah saluran untuk menghiburkan diri di waktu sepi.mencai ilmu pengetahun.

Pakar - nampakkah gelaran pakar , tetapi kualiti dan mentaliti sebegitu ringkas, standard sekolah rendah kebangsaan, memang ungkapan yang dikeluarkan tidak masuk akal, tak bikin logik, macam mana nak mengajar melayu jadi cerdik?

Asalkan ada kaitan dengan Islam, semua boleh disalahkan tanpa perlu hurai panjang pertimbangkan fakta, Asalkan bertentangan dengan Islam semua dijadikan haram, jadi , bilakah melayu boleh maju bila dapat bimbingan Pakar Melayu ? wa kah kah kah
